Abstract

18,871. Grunow, W., McElroy, J. A., and McElroy, J.H. Aug. 14. Electric railways and tramways on a sectionalconductor or road-contact system with electromagnetic switches. Conductors; switches; collectors.-Electromagnets U on the vehicle which throw the switches are excited by a shunt round the motors or from a battery which is automatically cut out when the main circuit is completed. The collector consists of shoes 0 carried by toggle-levers M and depressed by a spring P surrounding a guide R, but a long collector may be used. The switching-appliance is enclosed in a water-tight square box with a screw cover e<2> and a tubular bottom portion e<5>. Inside is a loose plunger i<2> lifted by the magnets U so as to cause the contacts i<4> to touch the underside of the lid of the box. The feeder K is coiled round the upper parts of the plunger before being connected to it, so as to magnetize it and to maintain it in the raised position while current is being taken from the surface of the box or from sectional rails electrically connected thereto. Flanges on this box permit its attachment to the insulated sectional rails and the stringers which support them. Structural modifications in these boxes are also described and shown in Figs. 7 and 9, the former showing a box with a cover secured by a central rod E<12>, and the latter a mercury contact F<23>. In another modification, the box is made continuous.
