Abstract

17,317. PetrÚano, E., and Bonnet, J. May 20, [date claimed under Sec. 103 of Patents &c. Act, A.D. 1883]. Gas and explosive-vapour engines, reversing. Relates to four-stroke engines governed by means of stepped cams, which gradually keep the exhaustvalve open longer and open the admission valve latter as the speed increases. The admission cams and exhaust cams 2 are secured to a disc 3, in the positions for forward and backward running respectively, by pins 13, 14, which are passed into holes in them by rings 15, 16 operated by handles. The disc 3 is fixed to the sleeve 11, which revolves with the shaft 12 and is slid along it together with its bearing 30 by the governor. In order to reverse the engine while it is running, the pin which was in gear is withdrawn, and when the engine has slowed down is re-inserted so as to admit a charge, which is compressed and fired before the piston reaches the end of the compression stroke, thus reversing the engine. The pin is again withdrawn and the other quickly inserted as the holes come in line with it.
