Abstract

5223. Turton, G. Feb. 26. Brakes.-Relates to means for operating rear brakes from the front fork or handle-bar lever, and arrangements by which the parts of the brake are concealed in the frame &c. Figs. 1 and 5 show one form, in which a is the usual adjustable rod operated by the lever b. On the rod a is a collar c engaging the bent portion of the arm d of the lever d, d<1> which is connected by the rod f &c. to the rod f<3> carrying the brake shoe g. The bent arm d is so formed that the collar c engages it in all positions of the handle-bar and front fork. Modifications are described in the arrangement of the lever d and part engaging it, segmental plates or slots &c. being employed. In one modification, the brake lever b operates a sleeve sliding on the vertical piece of the handle bars, which sleeve is engaged by a part of the rod corresponding to the rod a. A foot-lever may be connected to the lower end of the rod a or form part of the lever d. Various forms of connections from the lever d, d<1> to the brake at the rear wheel are described. The levers d, d<1> and f<1> &c. may be pivoted on removable clips or brackets so that the brake may be detached. The rod a and rods f &c. may be concealed in the tubes of the framing, the levers to which they are connected being pivoted preferably to fittings on the frame of U or open form, Fig. 22. The rod a may be connected to the brake by a flexible cord or wire passing over a pulley or pulleys. Fig. 25 represents an arrangement in which the arms g<1> of the brake shoe are pivoted at g<2> on, and project through openings in, the tubes of the upper or lower rear fork, the operating-rods f<2> passing through the tubes, Modifications are described. The invention is applicable to the brakes described in Specification No. 11,919, A.D. 1896.
