2717. Thornley, P. Feb. 2. Valves, distributing.-Relates to the valves in engines in which a cut-off or expansion valve is arranged to work on the back of the main valve, the stroke of the cut-off valve being automatically regulated by the governor. The objects are to reduce the pressure on the back of the cut-off valve, to quicken the opening for the inlet of steam, and to quicken the cut-off. These objects are attained by forming an admission groove a<3> between the ports in the main-valve A, and employing a cut-off valve C of B-section.
