Abstract

724. Toulmin, J. H., Coulthard, T., and Norris, W. Jan. 11. Compound and multiple-expansion engines.-Relates to compound steam, air, or like engines, and consists of a slide or rotary controlling-valve by a simple movement of which the engine may be run either as a two-cylinder simple engine or as a compound engine. Fig. 1 shows the upper part of the high and low pressure cylinders A, B with their distributing-valves D and C. Fig. 2 shows a section on the line a-6 through the controlling- valve M. In the position shown, high-pressure steam passes to the high-pressure valve-chest by the passage L, and steam from the intermediate reservoir passes by the passage J to the passage K leading to the low-pressure valve-chest. On the valve being moved to the left, high-pressure steam will also be admitted to the passage K, and the intermediate receiver will be put in communication with the atmosphere through the ports J, I. The construction of rotary valve employed is similar to that of the slide-valve described.
