Abstract

Formaldehyde is produced by passing a mixture of methylene chloride vapour and water vapour at a raised temperature over a porous body, such as pieces of clay, infusorial earth, or ordinary or activated wood charcoal. The condensate consists of a hydrochloric acid solution of formaldehyde. The activated wood charcoal may be obtained by heating substances containing carbon to complete carbonization with phosphorous acids or compounds decomposing into phosphorous acids during the carbonization or in presence of moisture.
