Abstract

189,427. Electric Boat Co., (Assignees of Bedell, C. H.). Nov. 22, 1921, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Driving-arrangements for screw propellers. - Vibration on multi-screw ships is minimized by driving the shafts at the same speed with the propeller blades in the necessary relative angular relation. Synchronous electric machines coupled in parallel may be employed for this purpose. For twin screws vessels, two Diesel engines 1, 2 drive, through clutches 3, 4, electric transmission members 5, 6 the armature shafts of which in turn driva the propellers 7, 8 through clutches 9, 10. The converters 5, 6 are connected in parallel by a switch 11 when in synchronism as indicated by the lamp 12 in a shunt around the switch. The brushes are connected in parallel through switches 14, 15, with a battery 13. With the switches 11, 14, 15 open, the engines 1, 2 are speeded up and the switch 11 is thrown in when the converters are in synchronism and the propeller blades are out of phase. For submerged running on submarines, the clutches 3, 4 are thrown out and the switches 14, 15 closed. By declutching the propellers at 9, 10 the apparatus can be used for charging the batteries.
