Cleaning machinery pneumatically.-In vacuum stripping-apparatus for carding-engines in which suction-nozzles are traversed to and fro across the doffer and cord cylinders by cords &c. on the carriages on which the nozzles are mounted, two nozzles are employed, one for each cylinder, and are connected by a cord &c., so that they move across the cylinders in opposite directions. The suction nozzle A<1>, Figs. 1 and 2, which strips the doffer A, is mounted on a carriage a sliding on a bed a<1>, Fig. 3, in front of the cover plate a<2>, and the nozzle B<1> of the cylinder B slides in a casing b, Fig. 5, between the doffer and the cylinder, and open to the cylinder. The nozzles are connected by wire cords C soldered to nipples screwed into the nozzles or carriages and enabling the tension to be adjusted. One of these cords passes over guide pulleys c<1>, c<2>, and is coiled around a drum c<3>, through which the traverse motion is imparted to the nozzles; the other cord passing over the pulleys c<5>, c<6>, completing the connection of the nozzles. The drum is driven by worm gearing c<7> and bevel wheels c<8>, c<9>, c<10>, the wheels c<9>, c<10> being slidably keyed on a shaft D driven from the doffer shaft. The stoppage of the nozzles at the end of their traverse is effected by the engagement of the carriage a with stops e at the end of a bar E, which slides on the bed a<1> and shifts the wheelsc<9>, c<10> out of engagement with the wheel c<8> through levers e<1> - - e<4>. The reversal of the motion is effected by a hand-lever e<5>.
