Abstract
189,174. Lacy, H. July 22. 1921. Electromagnets.-Relates to electromagnets of the type described in Specifications 17790/95 and 2887/06, in which the coil is composed of superimposed groups of wire, the diameter of which in each sucessive group diminishes progressively from the core outwards, and the direction of winding is reversed at the end of every second layer. The present invention consists in winding such electromagnets with an even number of wires of different sizes, each wound in two layers and with the direction of winding successive wires reversed; insulation is placed between all the layers of the winding. Fig. 2 shows a part of a lifting magnet having six gauges of wire a .. f. Various values of inductance are obtained by interconnecting the wires according to different combinations, for example, in series, in multiple or in series multiple. Numerical values are given in the Specification for particular designs of magnets wound with six and eight wires respectively.
