Ceiling and like overhead lamps.-A lighting unit is formed of an incandescent lamp 16 and a totally enclosing globe 14 having the bowl 20 thereof made translucent preferably by enamelling, and the neck 21 thereof transparent and of such a curvature that light rays, which are ordinarily reflected downwardly from one portion of the neck through that portion of the neck directly opposite, are caught by a diffusing-shield 24 disposed about the neck of the lamp and redirected into the bowl of the globe. The transparent neck 21 and the diffusing-shield 24 are both substantially conoidal in shape. The zone 22 between the bowl 20 and the neck 21 is enamelled so that the enamel shades off from the bowl to the neck. In one form the globe is suspended by means of screws 15 from a cap 10 supported from the cylindrical column 11 of the ceiling-pan 12 by means of bolts 13. The electric lamp 16 has its bulb 23 enamelled to reflect part of the light upwards through the neck of the reflector, and is supported in the globe by a socket 17 attached to a wiring conduit 18, which in turn is attached to a plate 19 soldered to the cylindrical column 11. The ceiling-pan is of such size that the shadow of the cap 10 is thrown upon it and substantially covers it. In another form, the cap from which the globe is supported may be attached to the ceiling-pan by means of a chain.
