Abstract
186,937. Mesple, J. Oct. 8, 1921, [Convention date]. Catches, automatic; striking-plates for latches; latches, lift and thumb.-In a fastening, particularly applicable to motor-car doors, plates attached to the edges of the door and door frame respectively have interengaging fixed parts, and also each plate has a movable part adapted to engage the other plate. The plate 1 fixed to the door frame has two projections 2, 6 forming a pathway with divergent sides 3, 7, the wider ends of which have notches 5, 8. It also has a projection on the same side as the projections 2, 6, and an arm 11 on the other side carrying a pivoted catch 9 with a finger-piece 10<1>. The plate 12 secured on the edge of the door has a projection 20 with feathers 20' adapted to engage the notches 5, 8 when the door is closed, and a roller 19 which enters the narrow part of the pathway between the projection 2, 6 on the plate 1 to form a guide. Pivoted on the plate 12 at 14 is a catch 13 having a handle 15 integral with it and a handle 21 pivoted to it and guided by the engagement of the pivot pin 24 in a slot in the plate. When the door is closed, the teeth at the lower part of the catch 13 ride up the incline 4 on the part 2 of the plate 1 and drop into engagement with the teeth on the part 2. In the first position of engagement the extension 16 of the catch 13 covers the slot 12<1> in the plate 12, and operation of either handle is sufficient to disengage the teeth to open the door. If the door is pushed completely home, however, the teeth interengage in the manner shown in Fig. 6, and the extension 16 is clear of the slot 12<1>. In this position, the catch 12 can be swung over to engage the slot 12', being retained there by a spring-pressed ball 17 in the end of the extension 16. The catch 10 must now be removed before the handles can be operated to release the door. The projection 9 forms a stop to limit the movement of the catch 13.
