Abstract

184,232. Hatcher, E. C., and Rooke, T. April 27, 1921. Transmission gear of invariable ratio; freewheel gearing.-A reducing-gear, for use in driving railway, tramway, or road vehicles, the prime mover being an electromotor or a steam turbine, &c., comprises perpendicular or parallel shafts geared together and carried in a casing, worm or spiral gearing connecting the said shafts to the driving and driven shafts, respectively. The gear is shown as applied for driving a winding- drum 16, an electromotor 14 being carried in a suspended frame 15, 20 and driving a shaft 3 which drives, through worm or spiral gearing 10, 11, a shaft 6 carried in a casing 5 bolted to the frame 15, a second transverse shaft 7 being geared to the shaft 6 by spiral or worm gearing 8, 9 and to the driven shaft 4 by worm or spiral gearing 12, 13. The pitch and direction of the gearing may be so arranged that the shafts 3, 4 rotate in the same or opposite directions, that the shaft 4 is locked when the motor is not driv. ing. or that the shaft 3 may be turned by the load on the shaft 4. The shafts 6, 7 may be parallel and may be geared together by spur gearing. When applied to vehicles, a track wheel replaces the drum 16, and the shaft 3 extends to both sides of the vehicle to drive duplicate gearing. or the shaft 4 is extended to pass through the hollow shaft 3 and carries both wheels, and one wheel may be connected to the shaft by differential gearing. A ratchet clutch may be arranged between the wheel 13 and the shaft 4 to allow overrunning of the wheels.
