Check tilting - plate valves; check loose-ball valves.-In an internalcombustion engine having a free piston acting as an air - compressor, the inlet valves at the top of the pump cylinder comprise a ring of thin flap valves 49, Fig. 5, oscillating about their r lower ends and communicat - ing with the inlet by apertures 55. The outlet valves consist of a number of balls 61 of metal, hard stone, &c.
