Abstract
182,782. Waller, A. E. July 6, 1921, [Convention date]. Welding; joints. - Wires, particularly for electric resistances, are joined by adding auxiliary metal to the joint and passing a current therethrough to weld the parts together. A resistance wire 2, 2<1> preferably braided and consisting of German silver, which is to be wound on a porcelain tube and then covered with a laver of insulating material such as vitreous enamel, Figs. 4 and 5 is first passed through a V-shaped bent clip 5 of iron or other high resistance metal together with a braided copper leading wire 4, 4<1>. The wires may be twisted together prior to insertion in the clip. The clip and wires are then welded together by a pair of pressure electrodes 6. The resistance wire is then coiled round the porcelain tube and similarly welded at the other end. It is securely held on the tube by carrying the loose ends 2<1>, 4<1> of the two wires over a groove in the end thereof and twisting them together at 7. The tube is then covered with vitreous enamel &c. so as to enclose the joint. In a modification, Fig. 6, the resistance wire forms its own lead, the end of the wire being looped and welded in the manner previously described to the body of the wire. To secure the wire to the tube, the loop is then arranged over the groove in the end thereof and then twisted as shown to tighten the parts together. The enamel coating is then applied and connection to the circuit is made by way of the small loops shown.
