Abstract
584,027. Wire resistances ; direct connections between conductors. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and GILLIVER, G. Oct. 17, 1944, No. 20052. [Classes 37 and 38 (i)] In the manufacture of a resistance element wound with fine resistance wire, a terminal formed of relatively large diameter wire has secured to it a wire of intermediate diameter, to which the resistance wire is fuse welded.' A cylindrical former 1 has a winding of fine resistance wire 2 having a diameter of 0.0024 inch, for example. A terminal is formed at the end of the former 1 by winding two turns of a thicker wire 3, for example about 0.018 inch in diameter, round the former in a groove. The two ends of the wire 3 are twisted together and form a stiff terminal. A wire 4 of intermediate gauge, for example 0.005 inch in diameter, is twisted up with the ends of the wire 3 and is brought out obliquely at 5. The end of the fine resistance wire 2 is twisted round the wire 4 at 5 and the wires 2, 4 are then fuse welded together forming a bead 6. The ends of the wire 3 and the wire 4 are then fuse welded together forming a bead 7 at the end of the terminal. The beaded end of the wire 4 is then bent round and tucked into the groove beside the turns of the wire 3 as shown. When the former 1 is finally covered with a glaze requiring firing at a high temperature the wires 3, 4 may be of the same material as the resistance wire 2. If no high temperature treatment is employed the wires 3, 4 may be of copper or bronze. Specifications 558,472 and '560,500, [Group XXII], are referred to.
