Retorts.- Vertical retorts for the carbonization of coal are constructed with sectional iron castings a having external horizontal ribs b and internal vertical ribs c of a dove-tail cross-section for support of an external brick lining d and internal lining e respectively. The lower flange a<1> of the upper section is mounted upon the upper flange a<2> of the lower section. The firebrick blocks which form the linings are retained in position by the ribs and flanges, and the metal part of the retort may be constructed as an integral unit.
