Abstract

181,548. Chadwick, J. C., Holt, E., and Chadwick, F. April 15, 1920. Feeding openers, &c.-The fleece passing from one unit to another of a breaking-up or other machine is passed into a transverse chamber where it collects and from which it is removed by means which seize a section of the fleece and positively invert it, so that it is fed forward to the next unit with the less worked face upwards. The fleece passes from the calender rolls a, a<1>, Fig. 3, and is directed upwards by a roller c into a transverse chamber formed by a vertically sliding bar b with projecting fingers b<1>. The accumulation of the fleece lifts the bar b and the fleece is removed by the co-operation of the roller c, which is fluted over half its periphery, and a similar roller d. These rollers rotate faster than the rollers a, a<1> and tear off a section of the fleece, which has been inverted, and pass it, with the aid of a carrying roller e to the feed-rollers g of the next breaking cylinder. The various sections are pieced together as they pass through the feed-rollers. The device is supported in a frame h<2> with a hinged cover h<1>, and can be attached to existing machines. The fleece fed forward by the calender rollers a, a<1>, Fig. 8, may be controlled by a continuously driven fluted roller c<x>, and a second fluted roller d controlled by an oscillating toothed quadrant j driven by a crank k. The reverse movement of the roller d banks up the delivered fleece, and then the forward movement seizes a section of the fleece and by co-operation with the roller c<x> feeds it forward in an inverted position to the rollers ex, g. The rollers c<x>, d<x>, ex are driven at a greater speed than the calender rollers and feed-rollers, and the forward speed of the roller d is greater than its reverse speed.
