Abstract

181,412. Schrader's Son, Inc., A., (Bowden, J. A.). Jan. 15, 1921. Pneumatic - tyre pressure gauges; piston - and - spring gauges. - Relates to gauges h a v i n g indicating sleeves adapted to remain in the position of maximum pressure after removal from the tyre and consists in fitting the sleeve as an external cap over the gauge casing. The cylinder 1 has at the lower end a hollow extension 5 with a projection 7 for pressing open the stem of the tyre valve, and rubber packing 8 adapted to make an airtight joint while the gauge is held in position by the hand. Air from the tyre passes by a port 6 to the underside of the piston 2, which it raises against the pressure of the spring 3 confined by the closed upper end of the cylinder. The piston carries a rod 13 bearing against the cap 12 of the indicating-sleeve 11 so as to carry it up against the friction of a packing 10 which maintains the indication when the gauge is removed from the tyre-valve. The pressure is read upon a scale 14 on the outside of the cylinder, the reading edge being the lower extremity of the sleeve. In a modification, the friction packing 10 is replaced by spring holding members mounted on the cylinder head, or the sleeve may be formed with spring tongues 15 bearing against the outside of the cylinder. '
