Abstract

Catch gear and like safety retaining-mechanism.-Ropes 7, 9 secured at the top and bottom of the lift well are passed once round pulleys 3, 4, respectively, secured to a shaft 1 mounted on the top of the lift x. The shaft 1 carries brake drums 5, 6 and is geared to a shaft 2 on which is mounted a centrifugal governor 11. The arms 12 of the governor are secured to sleeves 14 slidably mounted on the shaft 2 and provided with grooves 15 in which fit collars 16 attached to bars 18. The free end of each bar 18 receives the bifurcated end of a pivoted brake rod 19 connected to the brake bands 21. On the attainment of excessive speed, the movement of the sleeves 14 releases the brake rods 19 and causes the application of the brakes 21 to the drums 5, 6 and the stopping of the rotation of the shaft 1 causes the ropes 7, 9 and pulleys 3, 4 to act as a braking device for the lift. In a modification each of the pulleys 3, 4 is attached to one member of a clutch, the other member of each clutch being non-rotatable and pressed into engagement there with by governor-actuated mechanism.
