Abstract

181,040. B.S.A. Guns, Ltd., and Norman, G. Jan. 3, 1921. Line-throwing apparatus.-A cylindrical container 1 is mounted concentrically on the barrel 4 of the gun for throwing the projectile 14. The lower end of the container is provided with a collar 3 fitting slidably over the gun barrel and having a flange 5 adapted to be engaged by a spring-pressed catch 6 for retaining the container in position. A clearance is provided between the collar of the flange 5 and the catch 6 for permitting a limited movement of the container axially along the barrel so as to eliminate undue strain on the parts due to recoil in firing. In a modification, strain due to recoil is eliminated by connecting the flange on the collar to the gun barrel by a spring. The line is coiled on a cardboard tube 11, which is of sufficient diameter to permit of the end of the line being passed therethrough for connection with the projectile as shown, the tube being withdrawn before firing. An annular cover 16 is secured over the outer end cf the container by a bayonet-fastening. The two end covers of the container are each provided with an annular lining 2, 17 of wood or similar material so as to protect the line from the injurious effects of rust on the metal covers.
