Couplings, disconnectible ; overlap joints with packing at base or mouth of socket; joints comprising packing operated by fluid pressure.-In means for connecting an inflator to a tyre valve, also applicable to dust caps, rim nuts, &c., the coupling body B fits over the valve nipple and is recessed at E to receive a dog F, having a screwthreaded end, carried by a split-ring H located in an annular groove I in the body B, a cam-shaped finger-piece G. pivoted in ears h on the ring H, when tilted downwards, coacting with the adjacent wall of the groove I to move the ring H so as to cause the threads on the dog F to engage the threaded valve nipple. The dog F may be mounted directly on the body B by forming it with bifurcated ends between which the fingerpiece G is pivoted, the pivot pin passing through the bifurcated ends into elongated slots in ears on the body. In a further modification, the dog F is not fixedly connected to the finger-piece G but is formed with an enlarged flat head overlying the recess in which the dog is mounted to limit its inward movement and also forming the contact surface for the cam portion of the fingerpiece G, which is pivoted between ears formed on the body B or carried by a sleeve encircling the body. To ensure a tight joint, a flexible plunger K, which may have a conical bore, is provided in the body B and is adapted to be moved by the incoming air pressure into contact with the end of the valve nipple, the inner end of the bore in the shank C being flared to increase the area of the plunger K exposed to pressure. Instead of the face of the dog being threaded, the bore of the body, or both these parts, may be threaded.
