YORK.
TIRE-VALVE OR THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 8, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE V. MYERS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tire-Valves or the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tire valves or the like, and aims to provide certain improvements therein.
There are certain advantages in that type of valve, in which the valve seat, valve proper and actuating spring (if one is present) are contained in a casin which is coupled to the valve shell. umerous instances of this are shown in prior patents, but in such prior constructions the casing has been formed as a continuation of the shell, adapted to fit only partially within the latter, and has always carried the nipple of the shell. In such constructions the pump coupling screws on to the casing and not on to the valve shell. The screwing and unscrewing of the pump coupling has a tendency to loosen the connection of the casing with the shell and renders impractical the use of a plain screwthread. Some form of non-rotative connection has hence been adopted in connection with a union for coupling the two parts together. According to the present invention a casing is provided which is ada ted to fit wholly or partially within the s ell in such manner that the nipple may be formed as a part of the shell instead of being carried by the casing. This permits the pump coupling to be screwed directly on the shell. Furthermore in the usual construction of valve insides, a seat member is provided which is swiveled to a screwthreaded plug for holding it in place. The seat member is provided with a packing which engages a tapered shoulder on the interior of the valve shell. This construction demands a considerable constriction of the effective passage through the seat member. According to the present invention in its preferred form, the bore in the shell is a plain bore for the most part of its length, and the casing is preferably screwthreaded near its lower end, while the packing is preferably arranged below the screwthreaded portion. This permits the enlargement of the valve around its seat, so that greater areas for the passage of air can be obtained.
The invention comprises other improvements which will be more fully pointed out.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate one form of the invention,
Figure l is a diametrical section of the top of a valve embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 IS a side elevation of the valve casing detached;
F F1gi 3 is a cross-section on the line 3-3 in Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the valve proper.
Referring to the drawings, let A indicate a valve shell ada ted to be secured to a pneumatic tire, and one form of easing provided by the invention.
The casing B is intended to practically lnclose the valve proper C and the sprin D, if used. Preferably the casing is forms with a seat E near its top. The casing may be varlously constructed, but is shown as formed In two parts F and G, the lower of Wl'llCh, G, is adapted to fit in the 11 per, F. The wall of the part F is preferab y made as thin as is consistent with the necessary strength so as to provide as large a valve chamber H as possible. The lower part G may have passages of smaller diameter, since there is little or nothing to restrict the flow of air through such part- Preferably a socket I is formed in the lower art to provide a seat for the spring D. e part G is also preferably provided with an an nular groove J adapted to receive a cking K which makes a tight joint with t e interior of the valve shell, as for instance with a tapered shoulder or seat L. The shoulder L is preferably located a distance below the top of the valve shell which is greater than the length of the casing, so that when the casing is seated in said shell, its top will lie below the top of the valve shell. A screwthread M is formed on the casing B, preferably above the packing, such screwthread engaging a similar thread N on the interior of the valve shell. If desired the threaded parts may be at the upper end of thecasing, but it is preferred that they occupy the positions shown. The lower part G and u er part F may be connected in any sui a is way, as by driving one into the other, or otherwise.
The valve proper C may also be variously constructed but is preferably formed as shown. As illustrated, it comprises a cylindrical member having an internal socket adapted to receive the top of the spring D, a packing socket P adapted to receive the washer Q, and a pin R to be used for deflating purposes. Guiding wings such as S are preferably formed on the outer side of the valve proper so as to guide the valve while allowing passages T T around the valve, as
best shown in Fig. 3.
The casing 13 in the form shown is adapted to fit entirely Within the valve shell, but its upper end may project therefrom it de sired so long as the nipple U of the valve shell is retained so as to be capable of cooperating with a pump or the like. It is preferred, however, to form the casing so that it is substantially entirely inclosed, thus leaving the upper edge V of the nipple exposed to form a seat for the cap packing, such as 7, whereby any leakage through the valve either around the casing or past the valve proper is caught by the cap.
The outer diameter of the nipple U is substantially fixed in practice. In the usual construction of valve the interior of the nipple is reduced in diameter by a screwthread, which is necessary for the usual type of valve insides. By the present invention this screwthread may be omitted and the ,in-
creased diameter utilized. Furthermore in the usual construction the space is further restricted by the fact that a swivel connection must be made between the seat member and its retaining plug. According to the preferred form of the present invention this additional space becomes available for the passage of air. The reduction of the diameter of the seat may also be increased on ac count of the fact that the packing is preferably arranged at the lower part of the casing where more space is available, on account of the fact that there is no constriction at this oint due to the valve pin.
While I ave described and claimed one form of the invention, it Will be understood 7 that I do not wish to be limited thereto,
since various changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim as my invention 1.
