Swivelling joints; spigot-and-socket joints with packing compressed at mouth of socket; couplings, disconnectible; joints with yielding outer part compressed.-In a hose &c. coupling comprising a hose nipple a connected by means of a swivel joint with a female coupling member c, and a male coupling member e for entering the member c to a limited extent, a packing ring g is located in a recess f between the member e and the head b of the nipple a, in such a manner that the ring is closely approached or touched by the inner end of the member c when the coupling is made, and that when subjected to radial compression by fluid pressure a tight joint is made between the members a, c and members c, e. The inner periphery of the packing ring is formed with a slight annular concavity, while the member e, which is tapered and also provided with a hose connector j, is connected to the male coupling member c by a quick or interrupted screw thread d. The coupling may be adapted for vacuum pipes by forming the packing ring g, Fig. 3, of a cross section tapering from its outer to its inner periphery, and forming the inner end of the member e and the adjacent end b of the swivel nipple with correspondingly bevelled surfaces. To admit external pressure more effectually to the outer periphery of the packing ring, fine holes l may be provided in the female member c. The hose nipple a is formed of a metal tube having a slightly tapered or spherical thickened part at its outer end m, to prevent the hose from being drawn off when clamped thereon.
