Abstract
214,339. Wells, A., and Stone & Co., Ltd., J. Jan. 22, 1923. Branches and mains, connecting; swivelling joints.-A ferrule or nipple which is adapted to screw into a water, gas or like pressure main in order to connect service pipes therewith is provided with a screw plug valve h having a piston like stem f fitted with packing-rings k, o to prevent leakage. A cup-leather may be used in place of the plain packing k. Ports c in the ferrule communicate with an annular passage in a rotatable sleeve p to which the service pipe is connected by means of a screw-socket q. Leakage from the annular passage way is prevented by packing rings q<1>, r<1> the latter being seated in a recess formed by a depending flange on the cap m. When a lead service pipe is to be connected the screwed socket q is replaced by the joint shown in Fig. 4, comprising a liner t having a flange t<1> and a tapered spigot portion which is drawn into a tapered socket by means of a union nut u. The lead pipe is joined to the liner in any known manner. In order to screw the ferrule in the main the adapter shown in Fig. 5 is employed. It is screwed on to the head of the ferrule before the rotating sleeve p and the cap m are placed in position, the plug valve being closed.
