Abstract
178,409. Meter, J. W. van. April 11, 1921, [Convention date]. Fumigants; vapours, producing by chemical action. - Poisonous gases for fumigating trees, destroying animals &c. are generated by the action of chlorine on metal particles in the pressure of combustible material adapted to produce a dense smoke. Cynanides or metallic arsenic to produce chloro-cyanic or arsenical gases may also be present. The combust. ible material is preferably moist sawdust mixed with linseed, creosote or other oil. The iron or other metal particle: may also be coated with oil to prevent rusting, &c. The apparatus employed comprises a chlorine cylinder 1 delivering gas through a flexible pipe 3 to a cartridge 7 supported in a ring 8 on a stake 9 and containing the mixture of sawdust, metal particles, and other chemicals. The cartridge is removably held in the tapered bore 13 of a shell 12 and is perforated at each end. In treating trees these are covered as usual by a t-ent. 6. It is stated that the dense smoke produced prevents the action of light on cyanogen and that the carbon particles of the smoke absorb cyanogen and, settling on the tree, slowly liberate the gas in proximity to the insects &c. to be destroyed.
