Abstract
272,570. Beck, W., and Deutsche Goldund Silber-Schiedeanstalt vorm. Roessler. Feb. 5, 1926. Fumigants; vapours, delivering. - Vermin are destroyed in their burrows by means of gases containing small proportions of sulphuretted hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The gases may be separately generated and then mixed but preferably are obtained by ignition of a cartridge containing sulphur, a carbonaceous material rich in hydrogen, and potassium nitrate or other compound supplying oxygen in quantity sufficient to support combustion in absence of air but not in excess. Substances capable of reacting in the manner of gunpowder, or of the material known as Thermit, may be added. According to examples, the ingredients used are sulphur, sawdust, wood charcoal, and potassium nitrate, with or without the addition of iron powder. Smokeproducing or poisonous substances such as tarry distillation products, naphthalene, camphor, p. dichlor-benzene, hexachlor ethane, and arsenic compounds such as the sulphide, may also be added. The cartridge may be ignited in a tube having a conical open end to fit in the animal's burrow and closed at the other end. Air mav be pumped in to distribute the fumes after their formation but is not injected during combustion of the cartridge so as to avoid oxidation of the gases.
