Abstract

261,055. Graesser-Monsanto Chemical Works, Ltd, and Cohen, A. M., (Representative of Lefroy, H. Maxwell-). May 14, 1925. Fumigants .-Insects, particularly flies and their larvµ, are destroyed by means of the vapour of monochlornaphthalene or monobromnaphthalene. The vapours are produced by atomizing a mixture of the monohalogenated naphthalene and a hydrocarbon oil of high flash point with or without the addition of an aromatic substance such as pine oil or aniseed; by moderately heating a mixture of such compound with a solid body, for instance kieselguhr impregnated with the compound and moulded into tablets by pressure with or without the use of a binding agent; or by burning a candle of combustible material such as sawdust or carbon containing the compound with or without the addition of a binder such as aromatic gum and as oxidizing agent such as potassium nitrate. The combustible ingredient should be such as to burn at a low temperature so as to avoid decomposition of the active compound. According, to the Provisional Specification the active compounds may be used alone by heating over a flame or by pouring on to hot sand, and metaldehyde may be used as the combustible material for forming candles.
