Abstract

For disinfecting purposes, solid fuels mixed with an absorbent substance containing elementary iodine in an adsorbed, inactivated state, or with non-volatile iodine compounds are burnt to give iodine vapour free from injurious vapours. Suitable fuels are paraffin, stearin, hard spirit, solid polymers of organic compounds, or mixtures of these. Iodine may be adsorbed from solution on to kieselguhr, active carbon, silica gel or other adsorbent and then mixed with the fuel, except when the adsorbent is itself combustible when additional fuel is unnecessary. To convert the whole of the iodine into elementary form, oxidizing substances such as nitrates, chlorates, or peroxides, or reducing agents such as zinc powder, or hyposulphites, may be added. Other disinfectants which are volatile on burning may be incorporated. Binders such as vegetable mucilage, collodion, or other cellulose ester compositions may be used to mould the mixture into tablets, sticks, or bands, or the mixture may be used to coat rod-shaped bodies provided with friction ignition means. According to examples: (1) sublimed iodine is dissolved in melted paraffin and pulverized active charcoal is stirred in; (2) a mixture of p-iodobenzoic acid and hexamethylenetetramine, with or without potassium nitrate, is pressed into tablets; (3) iodic acid mixed with hexamethylenetetramine, together with carbon or sodium hyposulphite, is suitably moulded. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises the use of non-volatile combustible iodine compounds alone. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:For disinfecting purposes, solid fuels mixed with an adsorbent substance containing elementary iodine in an adsorbed, inactivated state, or with non-volatile iodine compounds are burnt to give iodine vapour free from injurious vapours.
