Abstract
177,139. Aston, T. March 18, 1921, [Convention date]. Sea and retaining walls.-A wharf wall is built of a series of small stepped-down retaining walls 1 and relieving platforms 2, supported by piles 5. The stepped-down bulkhead is preferably formed of concrete and moulded in steps each consisting of a horizontal member 2 and vertical member 1 strengthened bv counterforts 3. The members 2 may be provided with longitudinal and transverse strengthening ribs. The steps are cemented together and mounted on framing 8 supported by the piles 5 and connected by struts 9. A mound or bulkhead of rubble 6 is formed beneath the wharf around the piles and concrete or timber sheeting 10 is provided between this mound and the lowest of the platforms 2. The space behind the bulkhead is filled with earth which also supports the wharf floor 12.
