Abstract

176,146. Alexander, G. C. Dec. 3, 1920. Control mechanism.-A hand-grip upon the handle-bar or the like of a motor-cycle is axially slidable so as to operate a Bowden-wire control for fittings such as a carburettor or magneto, a collar on the handle-bar acting as a stop and as a fulcrum for the thumb or a finger during the displacement of the grip. Fig. 3 shows a construction wherein the grip may be rotated as well as axially displaced in order to operate two wires independently of each other. The hand grip is formed of a part A which is slidable, and a part B which is both slidable and rotatable, on the handle-bar 6. A stop 5 on the handle-bar serves as an abutment for the thumb. The part B carries with it a sleeve 3 having a cap 2 connected to a wire cable 1, which is thus operated by an axial displacement of the hand-grip. The sleeve 3 is locked in any axial position by a pair of blocks 7, 8 pressed apart by springs 9. The block 8 may be provided with a friction pad 13 of leather &c. and the block 7 with antifriction balls. Pressure applied to a knob 11 attached to the block 8 allows the blocks to slide freely. The rotation of the sleeve 3 turns, through the medium of a key 17, another sleeve 16, which is axially constrained by screws &c. working in a groove in a plug 21 secured in the handle-bar 6. Projections on the sleeve 16 engage a helical groove in a spindle 15, which is axially but non-rotatively displaceable in the plug 21. A second control wire 22 is attached to the spindle 15, and the first wire 1 passes freely through the spindle. Rotation of the part B thus operates the wire 22 independently of the wire 1. According to the Provisional Specification, the locking-device comprises a block inside the handle-bar connected by a spring-plunger to a serrated wedge, which in its normal position engages the serrated sides of an opening in the handle-bar, and is depressed by a pin to permit of longitudinal displacement.
