Abstract

.231,915. Laslett, H. T. Nov. 30, 1923. Control mechanism.-In vehicle control mechanisms of the kind in which a Bowden or like cable or rod is attached to a block sliding in an axial slot in a. fixed member and engaging a. spiral or like groove or slot in a rotary handlebar or like grip, the axial slot is formed in a sleeve secured to the outside of the handlebar by means of a clamp provided with a hole through which the cable or like transmission element passes, the rotary grip either in itself or in conjunction with a rubber or other covering provided thereon, wholly enclosing the fixed sleeve and the block sliding therein. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the axial or longitudinal slot B<4> is formed in a sleeve B secured to the handlebar A by a split clamping ring B<2> formed with a hole through which the cable D passes and a sealing B' for outer Bowden casing. The inclined slot E<3> is formed in a rotary sleeve, surrounding the fixed sleeve at E and reduced to seat upon the handle bar at E<2>, being retained in position thereon by a disc or stop F secured in the handle bar end by a screw F<2>. The rotary sleeve is provided with a rubber hand grip G the end of which may be flanged at G<2> to cover the disc F. A thin metal shield E<4> may be interposed between the rubber grip and the slotted part E<3>. A block C slidably mounted in the slot B<4>, is formed with a notch for the reception of the nipple D<2> upon the end of the Bowden cable, and with a projection, preferably in the form of a hardened steel roller C<2>, to engage the inclined slot E<3>. The slot E<3> may be of varying inclination, and a pointer may be provided upon the rotary grip to indicate the movement thereof. In a modification, Fig. 4, the fixed longitudinally slotted sleeve B is formed integrally with the split clamping ring B<9> and is counterbored to receive the rotary sleeve, the slotted part H<2> of which lies between the sleeve B and the handle bar whilst a sleeve H<3> attached at H<4> to the rotary sleeve together with the rubber grip G, completely encloses the fixed sleeve B. A pin K in the sleeve or clamp B engaging a circumferential slot H<5> in the rotary sleeve, prevents axial displacement thereof. The friction between the rotary sleeve and the handle bar may be regulated by means of a milled nut J engaging the slit tapered end of the sleeve, the rubber grip being folded back to give access. Specification 220,859 is referred to.
