To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, 'JosnPH RENE AYOTTE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Chicago, in the county of'Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Hand-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in hand tools, such as wrenches and the like. It has been my aim in the development of the invention to devise a tool of the kind described which may be easily operated and applied to parts that are located in relatively inaccessible places; to construct the tool so that it may be readily adjusted to operate most effectively under different contitions; .to provide means for securing to the tool parts which are formed specially to cooperate with other parts that are to be acted upon; and generally to so arrange and combine its component elements in a manner that will produce a strong, durable and adjustable implement. The invention resides further in numerous other features 10f construction and. combinations of parts, all of which willmore clearly hereinafter appear in the specification to follow wherein reference is made to the accompanying drawings which exhibit an exemplification of this invention in the manner following:

According to this construction, the tube and sleeve are locked in a relatively non-rotatai the tube being free, however, to move longitudinally of the tool as required for purposes of adjustment. To look the tube in a fixed longitudinal position, I have shown a thumb set screw 31 that is threaded into the sleeve head 18 in a manner to "present its acting end. against the tube which may conveniently'be provided at intervals with notches 32 with any one of whichthe set screw may cooperate. Such a notched construction, however, may be modified, if desired, as, for instance, by employing a knurled or milled surface, such as is suggested in Fig. 12.
The upper end of the tube terminates in a clutch head F which overlies the sleeve head, and which is preferably formed with radially disposed slots 33, the number of which, as appears in Fig. 6, ma conveniently be four. Arranged in clutc ing relation to coiiperate with these slots are oppositely disposed lugs 34, depending from the lower end of the tool head G which abuts .the clutch head, vand which is movably con nected therewith through the medium of a fixed tube 35 having its lower end apertured to receive a locking pin 36 which extends through the clutch head as well; the upper end of this tube 35 extends within an axlal bore of the tool head whose walls are formed interiorly with threads 37 projecting therein to cooperate with a threaded plug 38 adapted to be screwed into place against a shoulder 39 below which is a chamber containing a spring'40 which is coiled around the tube 35 presenting one of its ends against a shoulder 41, and its other against a washer 42 which underlies a pin 43 that passes through the walls of the tube in normal alinement with diametrically'opposed openlngs 44'that are formed in the walls of the tool head. According to the construction described, the tool head may be moved longitudinally of the tube 35 against the tension ofthe spring to disengage the lugs 34 from the slots 33 that are formed in the clutch head'so as to permit the tool head to be rotated without communicating its motion to the remaining parts ofthe implement. After imparting to the handle pin a quarter turn, the tool head may be retracted against the tension of the spring 40 to unclutch the lugs 34 from the slots 33 preparatory to reclutching the parts in a different angular relation. It is accordingly unnecessary to shift the position of either hand upon the parts that are grasped.
In Figs. 10 and 11, there is shown a fied connection between the sleeve B and extensible tube C. In this construction, it will be noted that I have provided a cross pin 50 which extends through the tube'C to project both of its ends within slots '51 which are formed longitudinally in the inner walls of the sleeve B so as to lock these parts mo diin a non-rotatable relation to each other.

Changes or modifications may, of course, be made without sacrificing the advantages of this invention, and in respect of all such constructions, in so far as th are defined in the following claims, I desire that they should be included within the scope of this patent.
I claim:
1. In a tool of the kind described, the combination of a bent casing within which is located at one end a tool member, and driving means within the tube for imparting rotation to the member, including a sleeve aving a universal and non-rotatable c011- nection therewith, a tube non-rotatably connected with the sleeve, two heads in end to end relation arranged at the sleeve end, one fixed and the other rotatable relative thereto, clutch elements carried by said heads in cooperating relation such that both heads may be rotated in unison in either direction, tension means for normally maintaining said heads in clutching relation, a handle pin slidably arranged crosswise of the one head and freely adjustable thereon, and a friction button arranged within the same head in cooperating relation to the handle pin for maintaining the same in any desired position of longitudinal adjustment, substantially as described.
In a tool of the kind described, the combination of a casing, a sleeve therewithin, a tool head mounted in the casing and adapted to be turned with movement of the sleeve, a pair of heads connected with the sleeve, one fast andthe other loose relative thereto, and a connection between said heads comprising slots on the one and lugs on the other arranged in cooperative clutching relation, and means for normally holding the two heads in clutching relation comprising a tube locked to the one and extended withdinally of the sleeve,

In a tool of the kind described, the combination of a casing having a bend near one end thereof, a headed'sleeve within one end of the casing and a headed thimble within the other, the headed portions of the sleeve and thimble overlying the proximate ends of the casing, a universal joint connecting the sleeve and thimble, means for rotating the sleeve and extensible relative thereto, comprising a tube arranged within the sleeve and having a pin projected therefrom to lie within a slot that is formed longitumeans carried by the toward and from the in any selected position of extension relative to the sleeve, and a handle associated with the tool for imsleeve head adjustable parting rotary motion to the tube, said handle including a pin arranged transversely to the axis of the tool and movable crosswise thereof in the direction of its own axis, and a friction device carried by the tool in association with the pin to maintain the same in any given position of adjustment, substantially as described.
