Abstract

176,019. Pattison, E. W., (Dictograph Products Corporation). Aug. 30, 1920. Microphones.-In a portable telephone set, particularly adapted for persons with impaired hearing, the microphone is provided with an internal rheostat the resistance of which is altered by means of a moving arm rotated with the carbon electrode, in order to maintain a constant intensity of sound as the battery runs down, or to compensate for varying distances of the source. A disc member 8, Fig. 2, is let into the back of the microphone casing and is connected with the electrode 10, containing granules 11, by means of a screw 13. A nut 15 engages the end of the screw, and by compressing a spring 17 holds the disc 8 and electrode in frictional contact. As the disc 8 is rotated it carries with it the electrode 10 and a contact arm 24 which is clamped between the two. This arm engages the rheostat 25 which is arranged inside the casing concentrically with the electrode. As shown in Fig. 5, current from the battery B passes by a terminal 30 through a strip 24 to the receiver R, thence by way of a strip 35 to a conducting ring 4 in contact with the diaphragm 3, Fig. 2, through the microphone, and back via the contact arm 24 and rheostat 25 to the battery
