Tabular calculators. - Comprises a device for counting the folds of cloth wound around a central core, and a modification, which in the case of ribbon wound on a core of the usual kind, gives the length directly of the ribbon wound on the core. A housing member 1 of sheet metal has extending from it a plate 2 of wood which carries a celluloid strip 3 on which are marked scales. The edges of the board are bounded by metal channels 4, 5, and by a cylindrical metal handgrip 7. Pivoted at 11 within the housing is an arm 10 which is extended over the scale 3 to form a pointer 12. An arm 13 pivoted at 14 is connected to the arm 10 by a spring under tension, and the arms 10, 13 are pivoted to a rod 17 fitted with a head 18. A prong 8 is secured to the housing and is pointed at 9. The housing is completed by a cover 6. In use, the handgrip 7 is taken in the right hand, and a thumb lever 19, operated to move the head apart from the prong 8. Five thicknesses of cloth, at the outside of the bolt, are then inserted between the parts 8, 18. This preliminary operation determines which of the spaces A, B, C, &c. between the concentric circles on the scale is to be followed subsequently. The indication is given by observing during this operation, which of such spaces has its first dot on the edge of the pointer. The prong is now inserted at the core and the thickness of the whole bolt of cloth callipered, the pointer will now indicate in the space first determined the total number of folds. In a modification for ribbon rolls, four thicknesses are first measured, and with a standard core these represent one yard. The scale is therefore graduated in yards. In this form the bar 17 is guided, and is moved by a single spring-pulled arm.
