Abstract

175,171. Vernon, F. S. Jan. 14, 1921. Tunnel kilns are formed with two or more independent firing-zones arranged in parallel, so that two or more varieties of goods requiring different treatment during firing may be treated. In the construction shown with two firing-zones B, G, the corresponding rail tracks b, g overlap in the preheating-section o' of the tunnel, and merge into a common track d in the cooling- section. Alternatively, the rail tracks in the preheating-section may be arranged side by side, or a single track with switches may be used. The tracks may be inclined either continuously through the kiln, or in the preheating and cooling sections only. The firing-zones may be isolated by the doors e, f, and the treatment of the goods in the two zones may vary as regards temperature, duration, or both. Round-ended trucks are used so that the separation at the end of the prebeating-section can be effected without fouling of the trucks.
