Abstract
173,450. Oliver, A. L. March 7, 1921. Blasting-fuzes.-A fuze 1 adapted to be ignited by a charge 7 fired electrically, as by a wire 17, is provided with a self-contained flame-filtering material 11 such as asbestos in a shell 5 attached to the fuze and enclosing the igniter 7. The products of combustion escape through a vent 13 in a sulphur plug 11<1>, normally closed by grease or wax which is expelled by a wad 14 when this is subjected to pressure from the combustion products. The fuze 1 may be attached at its other end to a detonator 19 and the joints between the fuze and the shell 5 and detonator 19 respectively may be covered by a waterproof compound or copper sleeve 20, which may be extended to cover lateral vents in the shell 5 in place of the vent 13, the sleeve 20 being broken through at three vents by internal pressure when the fuze is ignited.
