Abstract

Regulating; valve-gear.-The time of opening of the exhaust valve is varied automatically according to the engine speed by means of a centrifugal governor which adjusts the pivot of an auxiliary rocker arm 12, Fig. 2, co-operating with the main exhaust rocker 13 and its cam 15. The governor comprises weights 6, Fig. 5, connected by links 5 to collars 3, 4 on an engine-driven shaft 2, the latter collar being movable along the shaft and connected by an arm 8 to a shaft 9, which is geared to another shaft 10, on which the rocker 12 is mounted eccentrically and the rocker 13 concentrically. The rocker 13 overlaps the rocker 12, and both engage the cam 15. Fig. 2 shows the position of the rockers for high speeds. As the speed decreases, the pivot of the rocker 12 is moved over towards the left, so that its engagement with the cam 15, and the consequent opening of the exhaust valve, occur later in the stroke. A pointer 20 on the shaft 9 moves over a scale 19 showing the angle during which the exhaust valve is open. The pointer is adjusted, to show the correct angle, by means of a spring 23 connected by an adjustable screw 22 to the arm 8.
