Surface and outline gauges.-A gauge for testing and measuring gear teeth comprises two jaws with inclined faces co-operating with the movable, member of a dial gauge indicator. A sliding calliper gauge has the faces f, f<1> of its jaws a,. a<1> inclined at the pressure angle of the teeth to be measured and a movable member e of a dial gauge indicator C works between the jaws as shown. Used in conjunction with a master gauge block, the instrument can be used for comparing teeth of the same pitch, or, used with a master gauge block of known dimension for involute teeth and allowing proportional movement between the jaws a<1> and the member e, the gauge can be used for measuring teeth of pitches different from that of the master gauge.
