Abstract
172,351. Cannon, F. P. July 7, 1920. Cementation. - Articles to be carburized are completely surrounded by carburizing-material, the whole subjected to substantial mechanical pressure and the temperature quickly raised to about 1600-1800‹ F. by passing an electric current through the articles and through the carburizing-material. In the form shown in Fig. 1, electrodes 2, 3 are provided at opposite sides of a fire-clay lined container 1 which is provided with a screw-operated plunger (not shown) for compressing the material. The current supply to the electrodes is controlled by inductances 23. In the modification shown at Fig. 2, the articles 4<a>, together with graphilte rings 12<a>, 12b are packed in carburizing-material in containers 12 surrounding cores 10 of a closed iron circuit over which are placed primary windings 11 connected to an alternating-current supply so that the necessary heating-current is induced in the graphite rings, the carburizing-material and the articles 4<a>.
