Abstract

172,303. Rossi, P. Nov. 29, 1920, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Applied by backward pressure of tractor or relaxation of pull.-Relates to apparatus for automatically applying the brakes of motor-towed and animal-drawn vehicles and it may be also of the motor-tractor upon the slowing down of the tractor vehicle or animal. Fig. 2 shows one arrangement applied to a motor wagon and comprising a bar 1 sliding in a box 6 secured to the wagon frame 7. A cable 5 attached to the brakes passes round a pulley 4 mounted on the bar 1 and is secured to the box 6. The bar 1 is attached by the parts 2, 3 to the towed vehicle. A similar arrangement may be disposed on the front end of a towed vehicle. Springs for taking up shock and for returning the bar 1 after the brakes have been applied may be disposed between abutments on the bar 1 and the box 6 to prevent application of the brakes when backing the vehicles. Various forms of mechanical connection between the sliding bar and the cable attached to the brakes are described. Thus the bar may be pivoted to a simple lever having also a fixed pivot and attached at one end to the cable. This and the pulley device shown in Fig. 2 may be combined by attaching the end of the cable to the end of the lever instead of to the box 6. Fig. 10 shows a pair of levers 20, 23 pivoted together at 26 and to fixed points 21, 25. Or the sliding bar 18 may have rack teeth geared to a drum 23, Fig. 12, or an eccentric to which the cable 22 is attached or to a lever 30 with toothed sector, Fig. 14, or to a gear wheel to which is geared a second rack bar attached to the cable. Fig. 19 shows the sliding bar 33 and cable 22 connected to toggle links 35, 35<1>, 39, 39<1>. Fig. 39 shows a worm and worm wheel device 63, 57, in which the worm 63 is a disc screwing on the sliding bar 33. The member 63, Fig. 40, has screwthreaded engagement both with the bar 33 and with the fixed sleeve 34 so that it travels forward pulling on the cable when the bar is slid. Fig. 41 shows an arrangement in which the pole 58 can be displaced rearwardly and actuates brake levers 65, 65<1> mounted on fixed pivots 61 and, by links 67, 67<1>, the brake drum 68.
