315,608. Bate, B. D. Aug. 28, 1928. Actuated by relaxation of pull. - Brake-operating gear for trailing vehicles, of the type actuated by relaxation of the pull of the tractor, comprises a supplementary draw-bar e arranged within the main draw-bar b of the trailer and connected at the rear end to the trailer brake gear, the front end being provided with a shackle f within the shackle a of the main drawbar b, a draw bolt d passing through holes in the shackle f and elongated slots c in the shackle a, whereby the bars band e are capable of relative movement to release and apply the brakes. The rear end of the bar e is pivoted to a rod h having a collar i between which and an arm k on the brake shaft m is a spring j, a collar j<1> on the rod h engaging. the rear of the arm k. The ends of the shaft m carry arms n each connected to one end of a brake band o around a brake drum p. Each brake band o is anchored at the forward side of the brake drum to a bolt g, which is adjusted by means of a nut r and lock-nut s to adjust the brake band. When the pull of the tractor is relaxed, the bolt d moves back in the slots c, thus giving the shackle f, bar e, and rod h a backward movement, causing the spring j to apply the brakes. The bands o have a self-wrapping action, while when the trailer is reversed the bands unwrap and the brakes are not applied. By securing a pin d in front of the shackle f instead of through it, the brakes may be held in the applied position.
