Abstract

314,103. Kelley, R. W. Feb. 24, 1928. Applied by backward pressure of tractor or relaxation of pull. - The brakes of a trailer vehicle are applied by the overrunning thereof with respect to the tractor and also by the fall of the drawbar when the vehicle becomes detached. The coupling rod 30 slidable in the draw-bar or frame 20 hinged at 18 to the forecarriage 5 of the vehicle is connected to a lever 37 pivoted at 38 on the draw-bar. A cable &c. 44 extends from the lever 37 to a transverse bar 45 slidable in guides 47 and connected by rods 56 to brakes 15 on the wheels. The cable 44 passes through the upper turntable member 2 of the forecarriage and between a pair of rollers 49 carried by the pivot pin. The coupling rod 30 has an enlargement 40 arranged to abut on the end 24 of the draw-bar to transmit the draught pull. The brakes are applied by the rearward movement of the rod 30 in the event of overrunning of the trailer and also by the fall of the draw-bar and rod 30 about the hinge 18 if the trailer becomes disconnected from the tractor. To prevent the application of the brakes when backing the vehicle, a stop 56 is inserted between the enlargement 40 on the rod 30 and projections 55 on the draw-bar 20. As shown, the draw-bar comprises a pair of bars to each of which is bolted a member 24, the two members 24 being secured together and having an opening in which rollers 28 are mounted for the rod 30. The draw-bar may instead comprise a single bar having a downwardly-bent end providing the bearing for the coupling-rod 30.
