Be it known that I, VVILL'IAM SUL-WIN Gunmen, a .i-z'cnof the United States, :residing at Russell, in the county "of Na-rren and :ttate of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-BrakeOperating Means; and I do declare the following to-be 1af-u ll, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in wagon brakes, and has :for its object to pro vide a simple and. inexpensive, yet a highly eflicient and reliable operating mechanism for the brakes which will be automatically brought into play when the load has a tendency to move forwardly upon the draft animals, provisicn being made however whereby the brake operating mean'smay be held against action when backing the wagon.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a plan viewof a portion of a wagon running gear equipped with my invention.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a different position of parts and illustrating certain elements in horizontal section.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view as indicated by line 33 of Fig. 1.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view on line H of Fig. 1.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of certain parts of the brake operating means and the bracket by means of which they are atta ched to the front axle or other desired part of the running gear.
I have shown my invention in connection with a well known form of wagon having the usual front axle 1, front hounds 2 and a tongue 3.
The numerals 1 designate a pair of substantially rectangular horizontally spaced frames whose inner opposed sides are intended to slidably receive the tongue 3 therebetween, the opposite sides of this tongue being provided with suitable wear plates 5. The outer side bars of the frames 4 converge forwardly to some extent to contact with the inner sides of the hounds 3 and they may be secured to these hounds by Serial No. 630,928.

Preferably, this bolt also serves to anchor the front ends of braces 9'wh-1ch converge forwardly from the axle 1.
By mounting the tongue 3 in the manner described, it may slide longitudinally and in the present disclosure, this sliding movement is utilized for controlling the brakes-of the wagon.
The numeral 10 designates a horizontally elongated metal bar adapted to contact with the front side of the axle 1, the lower edge of said bar having a short rearward'ly extending arm 11 and a relatively long similarly extending arm 12, said bar and arms constituting a bracket upon which several important parts of the brake operating means are mounted. The two arms 11 and 12 are secured by bolts 13 against the lower side of said axle at opposite sides of the wagon reach 14 and serve to space the bolster rest 15 the proper distance from said axle.
A substantially horizontal lever 16 is fulerumed between its ends on an appropriate fulcrum member 17 which extends forwardly from the bar 10, said fulcrum member being pivotally connected to the bar if desired, as indicated at 18. One end of the lever 16 is connected by a suitable push rod or other thrust device 19, with the tongue 3, a bolt 20 being shown for loosely connecting the front end of said push rod with said tongue. The other end of the lever 16 is pivoted to a longitudinal rod 21 which co-operates with a chain or the like 22 in forming a pull device suitably connected with the brakes (not shown) for operating them when pulled forwardly. In order to maintain the proper relation of parts, regardless of the angle at which. the axle 1 may stand, I prefer to pivot a horizontal arm 23 to the rear end of the bracket arm 12 which extends rea-rwardly beyond the axle 1, the free end of said arm 23 being connected with the rear end of the rod 21 and the front end of thechain 22 or with any other suitable part of the pull device 21-22.
By employing the construction shown, it will be seen that whenever the .load has a tendency to run forwardly on the team, the tongue 3 will slide rearwardly, thus forcing upon the thrust device 19 and rocking the lever 16 111 such a manner as to pull upon the device 2122, thus applying the brakes the construction herein disclosed and it is therefore preferably followed. However, within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous changes may be made.
I claim:
'1. Wagon brake applying means comprising a horizontally elongated bar to abut the front side of the front axle, said bar having rearwardly extending arms adapted to be bolted to the axle, a fulcrum member extending forwardly from said bar, a lever fulcrumed between its ends on said fulcrum member, a thrust device connected with one end of said lever; and extending forwardly therefrom to be operated by rearward force exerted by thedraft animals, and a brake operating pull device connected to and extending rearwardly from the other end of said lever. 2. WVagon brake operating means compris- .'ing a lever and means for fulcruming the same on the front end of the wagon running gear, a thrust device connected with one end .of' said lever and extending forwardly therefrom to be operated by rearward force of the wagon, one arm of said bracket being elongated to extend rearwardly from the front axle; a movable arm'pivoted at one end, to said elongated arm; a brake operat- 7 ing pull device connected to the opposite end of said arm, a lever fulcrumed on said bracket and connectedat one end with said pull device and a thrust device connectec with the opposite end of said lever and operated by the rearward force exerted by the draft animals.
4. Mounting means for a slidable wagon brake operating mechanism comprising a pair of spaced open frames secured at their outer sides to the forwardends of the wagon hounds, a tongue slidably mounted between the inner sides of said frames and having a horizontal slot, a bolt passing transversely through said hounds, frames and the slot in said tongue, and a tongue holding hook pivotally and slidably mounted on said bolt within one of said'frames for engagement with the rear end of the tongue when'the wagon is backed.
