Abstract

Fair-leads.-Towing- blocks forming fairleads for the warps on steam trawlers are fitted with means for preventing violent impact between the blocks and the side of the vessel when the snatch-mechanism is operated to release the warps. Under normal circumstances, the release of the pivoted arm 6 from the suspension 10, to free the warp ropes 20, allows the pulleys 1 to rotate about the pivot 3 with an impulse, furr.ished by the pressure of the ropes, sufficient to make the block strike heavily against the side of the vessel. In the present construction, an arm 8 rotates with the pulley shaft 2 so as to engage the ropes 20 and break the fall, before the ropes leave the block. The warps are guided by two pulleys mounted close together as shown. The pulley for the " forward " warp has an extended bearing 1<x> on the shaft, which forms part of the bearing for the other pulley. The outer and inner surfaces of the pulleys may be coned as shown, also oil-holes 16 may be provided. The bearing-surface between the arm 6 and suspension member 10 is tapered inwardly as shown at 14.
