170,973. Bauert, C., and Bauert, W. H. Aug. 11, 1920. Harvesting-machines.-The combs of grain - strippers, headers, &c. are provided with teeth which are adjustable simultaneously or individually. Fig. 2 shows the underside of a comb. The end tooth is made in one undivided piece and the other teeth are slit at 30 so as to form two overlapping parts 1, 2. They are made of spring steel so that the part 1 may be moved to adjust the gap between adjacent teeth. The two parts 1, 2 may be hinged or welded together. The parts 2 are bolted to the comb plate 3 and the parts 1 connected to a threaded and spring- controlled rod 4, which may be adjusted longitudinally by the driver by means of a lever &c. The bent ends 6 of the parts 1 are held in position on the rod 4 by springs 24 and adjustable nuts 11, or by pairs of nuts 11. Detachable L- shaped plates 25 are provided to prevent the crop from becoming entangled with the rod 4 &c. In a modification, the rod 4 is mounted behind the comb plate 3 and the ends of the movable parts 1 pass through slots in the down-turned flange of the plate. If a reciprocating knife is provided for heading the crop, ledger plates are adjustably bolted to both parts of the channel-shaped comb teeth. Guides may be provided for the knife and strengthening bars or stays 22 for the comb teeth. In a modification, the stays act as guides. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, the ends of the movable parts of the teeth project through slots in the adjustable bar 4, the reduced end of which passes through a collar on a bracket 29 and is surrounded by a spring 26<x>. Means may be provided for adjusting the parts 1 individually.
