UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TAYLOR BURROWS, OF LONDON, ENGLAND, AssIeNoR TO THE FLAX GOMBING sYN-DIcA'rE, LIMITED, or SAME PLACE.
MACHINE FOR COMBING VEGETABLE FIBERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,79 5, dated September 26, 1899.
Original application filed December 29, 1897, Serial No. 664,402. Divided and this application filed January 20, 1899. Serial No.
' 702,827. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TAYLOR BUERows, en-
' gineer, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at 88 Upper Kennington Lane, London, England, have invented certain new and useful improvements in or relating to circle combing-machines or the like primarily to adapt same for combing vegetable fibers, such as flax or china-grass, (for which I have obtained the grant of Letters Patent in Great Britain, dated December 4, 1897, No. 28580 of which the following is a specification.
-This invention relates to circle combingmachines or the like, the same being a division of an earlier application filed by me December 29, 1897, and serially numbered 664,402, and primarily has for its object to adapt same for combing vegetable fibers, such as flax or china-grass; and it consists of im-- provements in or relating to dabbing the fiber into the circular combs and in the method and means employed in this connection.
Figure l is a side view of a part of a comb= ing-machine, showing my dabbing device. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on the line 8 8 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal cross-section of the same on the line 9 9 of Fig. l. I
Referring to the figures, a series of plates or strips 72 of metal or other suitable material are arranged edgewise on a block 72. and of any suitable width or widths, but always so as to be adapted to enter in the spaces between the respective circular rows of teeth 41 in the main comb and in such wise that the said plates or strips h will not strike or touch such comb-teeth or pins 2' or in any wise inpoints of the circular combing-teeth or pins 71.
Such guiding device j while permitting free vertical reciprocation of the strips or plates it will serve as guides to said plates and prevent lateral motion thereof, whereby it follows that such plates can enter only into the spaces between the said rows of teeth i and similarly with respect to the pins In addition to thisthe ordinary plows or fixed inclined plates in on edge (which are inserted between the rings of teeth '5 of the main circular comb in order to lift out the ends of the fibers in readiness to permit the feeding operation to take place) are mounted as usual 7 held rigidly betweenthe respective revolving circular rows of pins or teeth a of the main circular comb, so as to insure the said rows of pins or teeth 6 being maintained at their proper distances apart, and this definite position of the parallel rows of pins or teeth 71 is thus insured and maintained and the said strips or plates h on the block or support h be ing reciprocated vertically always in the same vertical planefor instance, by the reciprocating plunger or connecting-rod y. Consequentlyitis thus insured that the said dab hing-plates it will always accurately fit or enter between the circular rows of teeth iwith out touching the latter and enable rigid plates, such as h, to be used instead of bristles.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure byLetters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a circle-comb, the combination of a fixed guiding'device provided with perforations and a dabbing device consisting of a series of dabbing-plates mounted on'a block and means for reciprocating said dabbing device, substantially as described. 7
2. Ina circle-comb, the combination of the frame of a machine providedwith a comb, a fixed guiding device provided with slots, a
reciprocating dabbing device consisting of a series of dabbing-plates carried by a block and acting-rod,- guides for said rod and means for reciprocating said acting-rod, substantially as described.
