Abstract
170,404. Levy, L. A., and Davis, R. H. July 20, 1920. Respirators.-In respiratory apparatus for use in atmospheres containing carbon monoxide, the air is passed through a receptacle enclosing layers of oxidizing and drying agents and a cooling- device, and means are provided for detecting any failure of the oxidizer to retain the carbon monoxide. As shown in Fig. 1, the receptacle a is provided with a layer i of calcium-chloride granules, a layer k of oxidizing-agent acting catalytically such as silver oxide with or without manganese dioxide, another drying-layer l, and in the upper compartment c a cooling-box p containing sodium thiosulphate crystals and a layer q of detecting-substance such as that described in Specification 163,102 wherein iodine is liberated when carbon monoxide is passing. In a modified form, the detecting-material q mav be contained in a separate chamber removably attached to the receptacle a. Other forms of detection may be employed. For example, two platinum, wires may be arranged in separate glass tubes through one of which the treated air flows. By passing an electric current through the wires, any traces of carbon monoxide are shown by increased brightness of the wire exposed to them. A further method consists in causing the evolved carbon monoxide to combine with a substance, for example chlorine, so as to produce an irritant gas as phosgene.
