Abstract

163,102. Levy, L. A., and Davis, R. H. Feb. 9, 1920. Respirators.-Combined with a respirator a is an apparatus c for the detection of small quantities of carbon monoxide, comprising a chamber enclosing a reagent such as iodine pentoxide, capable of generating in the presence of carbon monoxide an irritant or lachrymatory vapour such as iodine, which travels with the inspired gases and warns the wearer of the approaching exhaustion of the respirator. As shown in Fig. 1, the respirator and detector apparatus are contained in a single casing, but they may be separate and joined by a suitable tubular connection ; the respirator proper comprises a drying- substance such as calcium chloride granules, and layers k of absorbent material, the gases entering by the inlet valve e; the detector, into which the gases enter by a valve f, comprises a layer n of pumice granules moistened with a mixture of. iodine pentoxide and fuming sulphuric acid, and a layer o of cotton-wool &c. for eliminating sulphur trioxide; and there may be a further layer p of a weak absorbent for iodine, such as inactive charcoal or granules composed of alkaline constituents and binding-medium, in order that the detector shall not respond to the small quantities of carbon monoxide that may be passed when the respirator is first taken Into use, and also, possibly, to the traces passed continuously.
