Abstract
168,677. Baker, B. H. June 8, 1920. Spring shackles.-A semi-elliptic main spring 7 connected at one end to the chassis 1 is connected at its other end to a box or bracket 4 which is pivoted at 3 to the chassis and carries the root end of a quarter elliptic auxiliary spring 5 which is either connected to the chassis by a shackle 6, Fig. 1, or rests on the axle j, Fig. 3. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the spring 7 under normal load may be curved as shown or straight, the box 4 rotating in a clockwise or the opposite direction respectively under the increase of load. According to the Provisional Specification, the main spring may act upon the auxiliary spring through link and toggle-lever or bell-crank devices, or through a cranked lever carrying a roller bearing against the auxiliary-spring bracket, and in some cases the main spring may be quarter elliptic.
