Controlling variable-speed .genring.-Epicyclic variable-speed gearing is controlled, by a plate s<1> which is moved in its own plane by a hand-lever l<3> to select, and perpendicular to this plane by a foot-lever z, to operate,. Control clutches and brakes are operated by thrusting upon the ends of rods p<1> - - p<4> by studs d<1> - - d<4>, the rods and studs having concave and convex ends producing a lock. Sideway and up-and-down movements are imparted to the plate s<1> by means l<1>, l<2> extending through holes in it and carried by a spring-pressed rod q<1> secured to the lever l<3>, which works in a ' gate.' The plate s<1> is supported on a thrust block t<1> normally held thrust downwards of Fig. 1 by a spring g<1> and released by cam-lever z.
